Everything You Need to Know about Severance Packages

Everything You Need to Know about Severance Packages Losing one’s job is probably one of the events most dreaded by everyone in any workplace. It means a loss of income and to many people, this also means the loss of their main source of livelihood. However, there are simply instances where businesses are forced to “downgrade” their operations, either by closing subsidiaries or divisions or stopping certain operations. Sometimes, this means that some departments have to be removed, and the people working on them have to be laid off.But all is not lost, especially when the company you work for has a labor union that acts on behalf of the workers or employees. One of the main points that labor unions pay attention to when entering negotiations with management is the matter on severance packages, or what will be given to employees in the event that they are forcibly removed from their jobs or laid off. © pixabay | ijmakiThis guide will shed some light on 1) what is a severance package, 2) what to look for when reviewing severance packages, 3) tips for negotiating better severance packages.WHAT IS A SEVERANCE PACKAGE?A severance package, also known as “separation” package, is the amount of money and/or other benefits that will be given to an employee or worker who will sever its ties with the company he or she works for. The purpose of this package is to compensate for, or offset, the loss of income, at least temporarily.Giving severance packages is not a legal requirement for employers. There is no provision in the labor laws stating that companies should have severance packages before they are allowed to operate. However, it becomes a legal requirement when there is a labor union formed within the company, and the union successfully negotiates terms for severance packages for its members â€" who are employees of the company â€" in the event that they have to be separated from the company. These terms will be detailed in a union contract, which makes it legally binding between the employer and the employees. In other instances, although there is no labor union, and there is no union contract to speak of, some employers may feel compelled, out of sympathy, gratitude or respect for employees, to offer severance packages.Whats Included in Severance PackagesThere are many people who think that an employee’s last paycheck is his severance pay. This is not correct. As the phrase implies, the last paycheck covers the employee’s salary or wage for the time worked leading up to the effective date of termination of his services. He was able to render the service and is being paid for it. The severance pay, on the other hand, is for the period after the termination date, when the employee has received his last paycheck. So what is the coverage of severance packages? We mentioned earlier that severance packages are any “amount of money and/or other benefits”, whic h implies that these packages may include financial and non-financial payments. FinancialObviously, most employees that are about to be separated from their jobs in a company would want to be paid in form of money. There is the severance pay, which may be based on the number of years of service. It may also include any bonus, commission or other deferred compensation (including business expenses that have not yet been reimbursed to the employee) that are due to the employee from the employer. If the employee also has rights under a profit-sharing and a 401(k) plan with the company, these will also be included in the money component of the package. If the company has provided stock ownership rights to its employees, the employee will also be given the option to exercise these rights and liquidate them, so they are also included in the financial component. Non-financialIn some cases, companies may pay part of severance packages in non-cash or non-monetary forms. When the money paid is d eemed to be insufficient, employers may opt to add non-financial benefits or perks on top of severance money. Examples include placement services for future employment, free job trainings and workshops.Payment Terms of Severance PackagesHow much must be paid? How much money should an employee receive as severance money? There is no fixed or standard amount on how much employers are supposed to pay. Be reminded that severance packages are not required by law, to begin with, so there is no pronouncement regarding to its amount. The amount of severance money, then, will depend on how much was negotiated between the labor union and the management, and was put down in the union contract. Usually, the computation makes use of the number of years that the employee has been in service in the company, and increased by several weeks of pay (depending on the management’s discretion) for every year of service rendered. How will it be paid? Just like the amount of severance money and the other in clusions in the package are not fixed by law but are actually subject to what is indicated in the contract, the mode of payment of these packages are also not fixed or set in stone. Mainly, it depends on the employer. Why is this the case?Remember that the main reason why most employers have to lay off people is because they are lacking in resources and have to do some cost-cutting. Thus, it is possible that the business may not be liquid enough to pay severance packages in a single lump sum payment. As a result, the employer may opt to make its payment on an installment basis, over a certain period of time. How are the terms established?Usually, it is the executives or top management of the company, in coordination with in-house human resource managers or even external HR professionals, who will come up with a formula on how much is considered to be fair and equitable. If there was a contract agreed upon before, this will also be used as aWHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN REVIEWING SEVERANCE AGR EEMENTSOnce you enter a company as a new employee, or become a member of a labor union within the company, you should take the time to go over the benefits and entitlements that you will get as a member of the union. One of them is the severance package that you will be entitled to should you find yourself losing your job in the future. The severance agreement contains the severance pay (financial) and non-financial benefits that the employers offer beyond a displaced or terminated employee’s last payment. This agreement is handed to the employee often upon informing him of the decision that his employment will be terminated. For sure, the employee will be assailed with various emotions, and a lot of questions will be running through his mind at the sudden turn of events. Unfortunately, it is the prerogative of employers whether they will keep on an employee or let him go. The next thing that the employee should do is to be objective about things and take a look at the severance agr eement.A typical severance agreement will detail the following:The specific amount of severance pay offered to the employeeBenefits that will also form part of the packageHow the severance pay was calculated or arrived atMethodology of payment of the severance payReturn of property, or clearance from property and accountabilitiesNon-compete and confidentiality agreementA covenant not to sueThese are not the only things that you should look for in the severance agreement. Go over it carefully so you will not miss anything. Most employees that are being laid off have only one main concern in mind: they want to get a higher amount of severance pay, so they focus all their negotiation skills and efforts on that portion. But there are other items that may be negotiated, if they only know what to look for. Here are the points of interest that you should take note of when reviewing the agreement handed to you.A valid reason for the termination. The business must have a justifiable business reason for laying off its people, and it must be documented. The company owes at least this much to employees, who deserve the right to know why they are being laid off.Learn more about valid reasons for employment termination in the following slides.[slideshare id=53654483doc=lifecycleofanemployee-termination-151007155730-lva1-app6892w=640h=330]The terms or basis of computation of the severance pay. The severance pay is usually based on terms of service of the employee, often the length of service. In a way, this also recognizes the loyalty they gave to the company during their period of employment; the longer they have worked for the company, the higher their severance pay is likely to be.Health and insurance benefits. While employed in the company, the employee is entitled to health benefits, such as medical and dental insurance and other healthcare benefits. You have to look at the terms governing these benefits in the agreement. Will the company stop paying its employer’s shar e in the premiums on the date of separation, or will it still continue for a period of time (this is referred to as the “employer continuation period”)?By understanding this portion, you may negotiate an extension of your health, life and/or disability insurance coverages. The details of the non-compete and confidentiality agreements. The company may feel compelled to exact from the employee a promise not to enter into a business or start a profession that will be in direct (or even indirect) competition with the company, once they are already separated. This is the non-compete clause in the severance agreement. The company may also require the employee to agree not to disclose any specific information considered as a trade secret of the company to others, at least without permission or authorization. This is a confidentiality or non-disclosure agreement. When you find these in your severance agreement, you must take note of the following:Scope of the clause and/or agreement. What c ompanies are considered to be in direct competition with the company? What information or “trade secrets” are you not allowed to disclose?Geography. Do the prohibitions extend throughout the country, or just within the state where the company operates? This way, if you have plans on striking out on your own and starting your own business that may be considered in competition with your old employer, you may not be held liable if you set it up on the other side of the country.Duration of the prohibitions. How long are you supposed to adhere to the non-compete and non-disclosure agreement? What is the timeframe that you must observe?Unemployment insurance. One reason why it would be better to wait for a severance package to be offered to you instead of resigning voluntarily is the possibility that you may be able to claim unemployment insurance.Post-employment assistance. Will the company offer help or assistance in you finding another job? Does the employer provide any outplacemen t services? Will they be willing to provide letters of recommendation should you apply in another company? More importantly, will the service be available to you?TIPS FOR NEGOTIATING BETTER SEVERANCE PACKAGESEven if an employee has no choice about the status of his employment with a company, he does get to have a say on how he will take his leave, and that is through negotiating the terms on the severance agreement. The agreement will be drawn up by the employer and handed to the employee being laid off, but that does not automatically mean that the employee has to agree and go along with everything that is written there. He, too, can negotiate, especially when he feels that some of the terms are not equitable. In fact, employees are given a specific period of time within which to review the agreement, so they should not feel too pressured to accept and sign the agreement right there and then.If you find yourself in a position to negotiate the terms of your severance agreement, take n ote of the following tips.Conduct yourself properly during discussions with your employer. Be careful not to take a hostile or offensive stance when negotiating with your employers. You want them to agree with you or reach a compromise with you, not to be antagonized. This may just put you in a bad light, and they will not be so agreeable to some of your points of negotiation. Show them that you are in a good place (and of good mind) to talk about things, and they will be more open to listening to you, and considering your demands.Be prepared when you come to the table to negotiate. You should have a list with you of the items on the agreement that you want to discuss. You may also have identified benefits that you want to be included. Make sure you have them ready with you, and that you have done enough research to be able to talk about them with conviction.Consider the sufficiency of the cash and benefits that are being offered. Are they enough for you and your family to survive, at least until you have found a new job or another source of income? You have to assess your current financial situation: your current assets and resources, and your expenses. This will help you determine how much you will need financially.Examine the company’s past history when it comes to separations. You may not be the first one to be terminated. Look for any precedent that will aid your cause. Look into the severance packages offered by the company to other former employees in the past. This will give you an idea whether you are getting just as much, or less than, they were offered, and give you room to negotiate.Consider whether you should hire legal help. Make an effort to know the applicable labor laws that will support your position as your negotiate. However, if you do not feel confident about this, you may want to consider hiring the services of a lawyer, especially one that is familiar with labor laws and cases on separation. You have to be careful, though, since this m ight be taken the wrong way by the employers, and they will think you are out to sue them. You should also consider the financial ramifications, because legal services do not come for free. You might end up paying more in lawyer’s fees than the actual amount you will get in your severance package.Your goal, as you make your way out of the company, is to maximize the benefits that you can get from your company. That is why, even as you enter a company as a new employee, you should check whether the company offers severance to its employees, and how much are provided in these packages. Do not be afraid to negotiate. You are already losing your job, anyway, so what else is there to lose?

How the internet has affected Music Free Essays

Before the invention of the Internet, Music was available from many sources. Most commonly, people would venture out into their local town and buy CD’s and records from music stores such as HMV and Virgin. Sometimes they would even record a friend’s CD onto tape instead of buying it. We will write a custom essay sample on How the internet has affected Music or any similar topic only for you Order Now With the advance of technology, people could even record from CD to CD. Music piracy existed before the invention of the Internet. This essay will focus on the effects the Internet has had on the Music industry Microsoft are one of the most important companies involved in this issue because they make they make the most readily recognised software to access the Internet and to stream media. (Streaming media is when media is listened to or watched when the media is situated on the Internet and not on your computer). Due to Microsoft’s monopolisation of the software market, few other companies were significant. However, in previous years, other companies have started to greatly affect the Internet side of this story. The most well known story of a company defying Microsoft’s power is the story of Napster and Metallica. Napster provided a free file-sharing service which let millions of users across the Internet ‘share’ their music files, which meant anyone with this program could download any music that was on another user’s computer. Metallica, a Heavy Metal band formed in 1981, are the second highest grossing Heavy Metal band after Iron Maiden. They filed a lawsuit against Napster in the US District Court, Central District of California, alleging that the company encourages piracy by enabling and allowing its users to trade copyrighted songs through its servers. This is the main disadvantage of the Internet’s affects on the Music Industry. Bands, record companies and music shops are all suffering from this new craze to download or ‘share’ music files across the Internet. The common misconseption is that the music is on the Internet, but most people get music from Peer-to-Peer programs (P2P). This means that people can share their music with the rest of the world. Users then search for the music they want and download it. Although Napster has now been reduced to a subscription based service, the main program that is used with Internet piracy is Kazaa. Not only can you download music using this program, but you can also download videos, pictures and software through the new Broadband services available to the public. Broadband is up to ten times faster than a normal Internet connection. As you can see from above, you can find hundreds of files to download, some with a download time of only 32 seconds for one whole song. If I can draw your attention to the magnified section of the picture, you can see there was over 3 million users sharing their files at that point in time. This is the reality of the Internet; people download albums instead of buying them, which severely damages the music industry. However, before the invention of file sharing programs, and before Windows 98, the Music Industry was beginning to be helped by the Internet Music Companies were the first to capitalise on the new medium to advertise their company. Record companies such as EMI and Sony set up websites that advertised their corporate image and focused little on product promotion. However, with the release of Windows 98, web pages could be viewed in a secure form, where no one else but you could view the web page. (See left) Once consumers had been convinced that their credit card numbers and their personal details could not be ‘hacked’, the Internet was revolutionised. The most famous companies to capitalise on this technology are Amazon. com and CDNow. Both offer services where the consumer buys the product from the website, and then the product is delivered to the consumers doorstep. The choice is overwhelming, with the consumer not only having the luxury of purchasing from home, but they also have a huge choice of products which are not available at their local record store. Here is an example of a rare Judas Priest import which is difficult to find here in the U. K. However, you simply need to type in your details and depending on how you have it shipped; you can have it the next day. This is both an advantage and a disadvantage for the Music Industry. It is positive for the consumers and the artists, because their material is easy to buy. Conversely, it is a disadvantage for music stores because people will simply stay at home and buy music. Bands have a lot to gain from the Internet. They can promote their band by making a website full of details, pictures, news and event dates, and even samples of the band’s music. This draws larger audiences for bands and they can also be ‘discovered’ by record companies who have seen their website. A further advantage is that bands can save money while controlling their CD sales. A band can record their own music in a studio and then distribute it themselves, therefore cutting out the publishing costs. Finally, to the present day, where connection speeds to the Internet are rising, and the number of people sharing music is soaring. How will the Music Industry survive? Microsoft could hold the key. It is rumoured that the next version of Windows will only play media that has been created on your computer, stopping the file sharing craze dead in its tracks. Is it true? Only time will tell. Reflection Paper on Life Goals Essay Example

Reflection Paper on Life Goals Paper More and more Americans are struggling to stay healthy. People are finding it harder to fit exercise into their lives, develop healthy eating habits, maintain their weight, and to manage stress. It is not that people aren’t trying, but the American way of life has become a roadblock to the pursuit of health. In order to improve our health; we must shift our focus on improving our lifestyle behavior. Over the course of this semester, this class has taught me to analyze my overall well-being, stress level, and what to expect from my future. To begin I’ll start by introducing myself, goals, aspirations, education, and what life is like for me on a day to day basis. My name is Loretta; this is my final semester at Mercy College. I will obtain my Bachelor of Science degree in Legal Studies with a specialization in Paralegal Studies. In addition, I have obtained my certification to practice as a Mediator in the state of New York. Presently, I am employed full time as a Paralegal; I also hold a certification as a Sports Nutritionist. My academic goal is to successfully complete Law School; my career goal is to become an Attorney. This is because when working on a case it is difficult to share the workload, not knowing where someone made an error, or if a motion was not filed correctly; it is too time consuming to fix the mistake of someone else. Therefore, if I made a mistake I’ll know exactly how to rectify the situation. Unfortunately, by working alone I haven’t had the privilege of making friends. This puts a damper on my social life and possibly my social skills. In addition, I noticed my stress level is pretty high due to taking 6 classes/ semester, work Full Time and cohabitate with my boyfriend. My diet could also be better; there are never enough hours in the day. I hardly have time to cook, eat or sleep. My doctor even prescribed my sleeping pills (which I try not to take). This about sums up my life in a nutshell, as you can tell it’s nothing particularly exciting. However, this course has taught me to reevaluate my life goals and how to balance the obstacles life has thrown at me. First, I noticed when students (like myself) study at College, we face difficult problems such as higher expectations from our parents, financial problems, exams or assignments. These examples can cause mental and physical stress to any student. Stress can be defined as the body’s reaction from any situation. Sometimes appropriate stress is good for students, it can push them to work better. (www. wattpad. com) However, stress brings more harm than benefits. When students live under pressure, they may always feel angry and argue with their friends or loved one by little provocation or no reason at all. Stress also can make students feel lonely or isolated, they may trigger crying jags, sometimes without warning, or they may cry for little things unrelated to their stress. (www. wattpad. com) Methods of stress management involve controlling and reducing the tension that occurs in stressful situations by making emotional and physical changes. A person’s attitude can influence whether a situation is emotional or not. A poor diet also puts the body in a state of physical stress and weakens the immune system. Someone with no outside interests, hobbies or other ways to relax may be less able to handle stressful situations. Some things we can do to take control of our stress level is by eating foods that improve your health and well-being. Such as increasing the amounts of fruits and vegetables we consume daily. Also, make an effort to socialize. Certain individuals under stress choose to be isolated and this can cause a feeling of loneliness. In addition to stress, health issues can also determine my future. If I go to the doctor one day and he finds something wrong with me, if I get cancer or a live threatening disease. This will hold me back from achieving my goals because my body will not be as strong as it should be to handle the pressure of school, and work. All these conditions can help prevent me from being who I want and getting the job I want. Health can be maintained by eating good nutritious food. This includes eggs, milk, pulses, fruits, etc. I supplement my diet with vitamins and do my best to avoid medication. I exercise regularly; this keeps me healthy not only physically but mentally too. I try to avoid eating at comers of the streets where street hawkers sell unhygienic and often stale food. I like to eat food cooked at home. Fresh fruit juices and salads keep me healthy too. Maintaining happiness is equally good. I keep my temper low and try to stay as happy as possible so that my health does not get affected. I have made these habits a part of my life and I find myself feeling very happy and contended with myself most of the time as I have a peaceful mind housed in a healthy body. Furthermore, besides maintaining a healthy diet and exercise we should also consider a Primary Care Physician. As most of us know, long term relationships can be hard. This is why it’s important to find the physician who gives you what you’re looking for. Just like dating, PCP’s vary in personality and practice style. (Lamberts 2009) When searching for an ideal doctor, you’ll want to ask yourself: Do you want a young doctor with recent/modern training or an older doctor with experience? Does it matter if your doctor is on time efficient or would you rather have one who takes their time to talk but generally runs late? Do you want a well-established popular doctor with few appointments available, or a less known doctor with more openings? What about a doctor who sets rules and tells you what to do versus a doctor who negotiates and explains? Would you rather a specialized doctor (Ex: pediatrician, internal medicine) or a family doctor? Overall, different people have different preference. (Lamberts 2009) The most important thing for us is that the doctor is always on time, people will often compromise on the other things to ensure they don’t have to spend a long time in the waiting room. Finally, five years from now I would like to achieve most of my lifetime goals. Hopefully one day I will be married and maybe have children. I wouldn’t mind remaining in Westchester County; however my home is in Florida. Unfortunately, the pay ratio is substantially low and I would not be able to financially accommodate myself or my family. My professional goal in life is to become a lawyer. In the last decade, careers in the field of law have become more important due to the increasing number of lawsuits. I can see myself walking into a court room with my suit and briefcase. It is a goal that I must strive to achieve. If you have dreams you have something to look forward to; something to focus on; even something to live for. To accomplish any dream, you must first face adversity in the eye and conquer your fears. For me personally, training to be a lawyer will take time and commitment. I must constantly look at where I am now and evaluate where I need to go from here. There will never be a time in your life where you are at the top. You must keep climbing the ladder of success. My happiness in what I do is also a goal. There is no way anyone can find self-fulfillment if they are not happy with what they are doing. Aside from professional goals, I hope to maintain a healthy lifestyle and occupy my free time with outdoor activities. My current academic/employment situation does not allow time for any extracurricular activities. I see my goals as tangible, and they are well within my reach. I work hard for these things not only to make a good life for myself, but to make a wonderful life for my future children. Setting goals prevents me from becoming sidetracked, and it allows me to push harder and further for my aspirations. If I maintain my focus, nothing will ever defer my dreams. Technological solutions for human services

Technological solutions for human services Human services are movements, which seek to address the needs of the less privileged in the society. While offering their services, organisations are faced with three main barriers in planning, funding and empowerment of their clients.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Technological solutions for human services specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More These barriers include organization, provision of transportation to clients, keeping trail of clients, and ensuring that prospective clients are reached. To address these barriers, the use of technology became very essential for an organisation to concentrate on its core activities. Technological solutions also provide the human services with a chance to handle its responsibilities with ease and incur minimum costs. This involves the use of applications that address the barriers that exist in the human services on a continual basis and upgrading it to meet the changing demands. T he desire of human service to be more productive and organised involves the careful organisation of its activities, clearly portraying the sources of its funding, showing the track of its clients and finding means in which they can access their clients. For effective management and budgeting of these activities, it requires the incorporation of appropriate technology that can be able to reveal and store the records of the organisation. In management of funds of the organisation, it is essential to establish means in which anyone with authorisation can know the source of funding, how the funds are being utilised and ways in which they can contribute to the organisation. With the presence of good financial planning the human services can be able to offer its services to their clients accordingly and appropriately. The use of technology becomes very critical to offer the services to the clients who are widely spread in the inaccessible parts of the country. The offices that are decentr alised are interconnected with satellite and this facilitates the adoption of other essential software.Advertising Looking for essay on computer science? For communication to be effective the human services uses emails to distribute notices, meeting notes and any concerns of the organisation (Gillam 126). Such formality enables everyone to be updated any give any suggestion and direction to the agency. Application of technology like the development and use of spread sheets facilitate the organisation to critically maintain and utilise its data effectively. Spread sheets allow the organisation, management and utilisation of data. This application software is used to indicate where funding is obtained from, analyze how the fun ding is used, process the financial data and indicate the financial standing of the agency. By use of this software the agency financial standing can be determined and be used to lobby for funds, presented to the federal government, negotiate for favourable laws and shown to any interested as a source of indicating the credibility of the agency. This software can deal with the barrier of organization sufficiently. For most of the active and prospective clients, transport is the hindering factor in their reception of services from the human services. Since transportation infrastructure is not extensive, the demand of means to access these clients become essential. Human services utilises the internet to provide information by use of application like PowerPoint presentation and Microsoft word. PowerPoint presentation enables the clients to learn new things by themselves at their dwelling points. Word documents facilitate the human services to provide the information regarding their se rvices, links that give other relevant ideologies and updates of the agency. Moreover, notices can be issued to the clients through the application on the educational videos they can watch to meet their needs. Clients at the same time can be able to raise their concerns and complement for the services they receive. This technology adequately curbs the challenges of transportation and becomes environmentally and financially suitable for the agency (Ginsberg 224). The clients therefore see technology as essential and fundamental in the provision and reception of assistance.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Technological solutions for human services specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More The activities of the human services involve the interconnection with several people inclusive of clients. To meet adequately this function, the use of technology becomes very demanding. Appropriate technology is the database, which can be ab le to keep records, collecting information and keeping trail of clients. Similarly, database enables the agency to ease its efforts of collecting, storage, retrieval and reporting of data. By keeping the database accurate and updated, the agency can be able to foster productive working environment and the limitless possibilities that the databases provide. Report generating applications provide the agency with the relevant need of statistical reports and analysis of its progress. Since the organisation is able to provide the necessary service to its clients of organising itself, keeping trail of its clients and reaching out to the potential clients, it must analyze its progress and performance. This software enables the agency to report the statistics and other material information of the agency. About this, an analysis of the performance, weaknesses, their client rating and inefficiencies that exist in their services can be dealt with periodically and accordingly. The reports gener ated can be used as a measure of their service standards and formulate policies and plans that can be used to liaise with the government on the needs of the clients of the human services. The incorporation of technology through such application software like databases, Microsoft word, PowerPoint presentation, reporting applications, webcam services and internet provide a means of breaking the agencies barriers. Although the use of technology portrays that human services organisation can handle their tasks with many efficiencies there exist some problems and weakness with its usage. Despite this, their importance outweighs their demerits.Advertising Looking for essay on computer science? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Gillam, Scott. My Home of Yesteryear - Descriptive Essay

My Home of Yesteryear - Descriptive Essay In this descriptive essay, student Mary White imaginatively recreates her childhood home in the country. My Home of Yesteryear by Mary White Situated on the bend of a horseshoe-shaped dirt road that intersects a back country highway is the place I called home as a child. Here my elderly father raised his two girls without the help or companionship of a wife. The house is set back about 200 feet from the road, and as we saunter up the narrow dirt pathway, lined with neat rows of flamboyant orange gladiolas on each side, the tidy appearance of the small, unpainted frame house entices us to enter. Up the steps and onto the porch, we cant help but notice a high-backed rocker on one side and a bench worn smooth by age on the other. Both remind us of the many vesper hours spent here in the absence of modern-day entertainment. Turning the door knob and entering the parlor is like taking a step back in time. There is no lock on the door and no curtains on the windows, only shades yellowed with age, to be pulled down at nightas if you needed privacy out here in the boondocks. Dads big over-stuffed armchair is set beside the well-stocked bookcase where he enjoys passing a hot afternoon with a good book. His bed, an old army cot, serves as a couch when company comes. One lone plaque with the words Home, Sweet Home adorns the wall over the mantelpiece. Just to the left is a doorway, minus a door, beckoning us to investigate the aroma drifting our way. As we step into the kitchen we are overtaken by the rich smell of freshly baked bread. Dad is removing the loaves from the belly of Old Bessie, our coal-burning cookstove. He leaves them to cool in neat rows on our homemade plank table. Turning toward the back door, we see an honest-to-goodness ice box, and yes, theres a genuine silver quarter for the ice man to take in exchange for 50 pounds of dripping ice. I can picture him now as he snatches the tongs tightly into the frozen block, causing tiny slivers of sparkling ice to fly everywhere. Swinging it down off the back of his chug-a-lug of a truck and instantly throwing his other arm up to keep his balance, he staggers with his load toward the back door. Hoisting the block of ice into place, he gives a long, loud sigh of relief and drops the shiny quarter into his pocket. Stepping outside the back door, we suddenly realize there is no running water in the kitchen, for here stands the only water pipe around. The galvanized tubs, set upside down by the steps, indicate that here is where most of the bathing occurs. A little footpath leads us to a hand pump, somewhat rusty but still providing a cool refreshing drinkif we can prime the pump. As Dad douses its rusty throat with water, it gurgles for a minute or two, then belches back a flood of sparkling clear spring water, free from the chemicals the law requires of modern water systems. But the pathway doesnt stop here. It winds on out behind a dilapidated shack. No imagination is needed to know where it ends. As dusk approaches we must slip around to the front porch and relax as we enjoy a country sunset. The sky is absolutely breathtaking with its soft ribbons of orange and violet. The sun, ablaze with beauty, casts our long shadows across the porch and onto the wall behind us. Everywhere nature is praising its Maker and singing its night songs. Off in the distance the whip-poor-wills are just starting their nightly lamentations. The crickets and frogs join in while bats dart overhead in search of a juicy tidbit for breakfast. Bats, you see, begin their day at sunset. The house itself joins in the chorus with its creaks and cracks of contraction as the coolness of the evening settles around us. Indeed, a visit to the old homeplace brings back many fond memories, almost making us wish we could turn back the clock to enjoy a few moments of peace and innocence. Final Conclusions Memo Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Final Conclusions Memo - Essay Example Louis which has won many games than the Boston and the difference in salary, is quite notable. Another variable is the attendance of the games. It is an expectation on everyone’s mind that the larger the attendances n the games the higher the players get paid. This is not the case, however, looking at the San Diego attendance as compared to the Boston, it was slightly higher, but the difference in the incomes is so higher. Boston earns a whopping 123.5$ San Diego earns 63.3$, while Chicago a team that earns a salary of 87.0$ with an attendance of more 3,100,092 million. This does not reflect in any way on the wins nor is the salary paid to the players. When it comes to baseball teams, it is exceptionally clear that money cannot make a team into a winning team. What actually makes a team to win is all about the player’s personality and the team chemistry not all about the salary they receive. A strong team requires a player with the same goals and the same

CIS Snapshot :: essays research papers

..::CIS Snapshot::.. When I think of CIS one thing always comes to mind. My first day. No, not my first day this year. The day I’m referring to was the first time I ever came to CIS last year. Near completion of the Danish â€Å"Folke Skole† you have to choose and apply to various â€Å"Gymnasiums† much like applying for university after high school in the states. One of the schools I wanted to attend was CIS. I asked my supervisor if she couldn’t arrange a day where I could go to CIS and see what the IB programme was all about. She said she would try and the next day I got a letter from her telling me the date and time when I would have to go to CIS. When I first arrived at CIS, I was a little overwhelmed at the size. It isn’t a very big school but its layout was a little difficult and I had a hard time finding my way around until I finally ask a student where a Mrs. Richardson was. He, of course, didn’t know. After about 10 minutes of wandering around the halls I finally find the office and they tell me her office was downstairs. I find her at last and she seemed confused why I was there. Apparently she thought I wasn’t due until the week after. I was beginning to have some doubts about the organisational skills of the school. She looks around the halls and pulls the first student she can find to the side and asks if she doesn’t mind showing me around. She nods and tells me to follow her quickly as she was late for class. So my first class at CIS was art. I thought this was going to be fun as I always liked art but after the first mind numbing hour I realised that this wasn’t cut out for me. Th e class itself was fine and the teacher was a fun guy but I had nothing to do other than just watch the other students make their brilliant masterpieces of art. There was one high point and that was when the art teacher told the class that he read an article about a homicidal doctor who would stick ice picks up people’s noses. Fun. After two hours we were finally allowed to go. â€Å"Now what† I thought. Well apparently nothing.

Executive Vice President is also responsible and in charge of six other Senior Vice- Principals who in turn in charge of different departments such as law, business development and strategy, human resources and administration, communication, and internal governance. From the production management side, Boeing’s Business Development and Strategy is operating under two units, which are Boeing Commercial Airplanes and Boeing Integrated Defense Systems. Supporting these two units are Boeing Capital Corporation, Boeing Shared Services Group, and Engineering, Operations & Technology, Aircraft Financial Services and Space & Defense Financial Services. Under the charge of its vice president and general manager, again the structure describes â€Å"Aircraft Financial Services works closely with Boeing Commercial Airplanes customers to develop aircraft financing solutions. Working with commercial financial institutions, the group is proactively engaged with the U. S. Export-Import Bank and other export credit agencies to ensure availability of adequate and reasonably priced financing for developing customers and regions. Aircraft Financial Services is playing an integral role, along with the Aviation Working Group, in improving the global aircraft financing infrastructure and ratifying the Cape Town Treaty, which will improve the legal framework for international asset-based aircraft financing. The group also is actively engaged to enhance and expand the capital markets. † The Space & Defense Financial Services, on the contrary, arranges and structures financing solutions for government and commercial customers around the world. Vice President of the financial corporation â€Å"and his group work closely with Boeing’s Integrated Defense Systems business unit to help arrange funding for satellites, military transports, tankers and rotorcraft. Boeing recognizes the diverse and highly skilled workforces who have great contribution to its success and has led the company to lead the world as the â€Å"world’s second largest† commercial and defense aircrafts. The people culture represents a lifelong learning experience. The diversity of the people also determines the culture of the company, which is for some, it is refreshing. From human development perspective, Boeing provides an opportunity for its employees to improve their skills through company-paid tuition program, through Boeing Leadership Center, and a continuous learning through other programs outside the company so that employees can â€Å"pursue studies in unlimited fields and environments† According to Boeing, its success is driven by its â€Å"ability to provide our customers with the right solutions at the right time and the right cost,† more effective in addressing â€Å"future evolving requirements for capability-driven solutions,† and is able to further â€Å"improve execution, reduce organizational complexity, and improve competitiveness† for its customers. In its Philanthropy Report, Boeing claims its â€Å"commitment to being a good corporate citizen. In fact, good corporate citizenship is a core value of our company and is integral to the way we conduct business around the globe. Executive members are engaging in the activity of several nonprofit organizations including in college and university while employees are engaging in volunteer activities and other community programs. The company continues expanding as it generates new innovations. With expansion, its capabilities and capacity also increase, from human resources development to â€Å"more efficient members of its commercial airplane family; integrating military platforms, defense systems and the war fighter through network-centric operations; creating advanced technology solutions; providing broadband connectivity on moving platforms including airplanes; and arranging innovative customer-financing solutions. † The company boasts of its management and leadership success in the field of commercial aircraft and integrated defense system. Its strategy is to provide â€Å"the right people for the right job, technologies, processes and performance at the right time and in the right place across the company worldwide. † And to take a leadership role by creating a primary supports to its business units through several organizational groups such as Phantom Works, Intellectual Property Management, and Information Technology, as well as in the Engineering, Operations, Quality, and Information Technology process councils. According to Boeing, â€Å"through all its activities, Engineering, Operations & Technology helps ensure the future success of Boeing by winning strategic new programs, providing innovative technology and process solutions, transforming Boeing into a global network-centric enterprise, enhancing and protecting the company’s intellectual capital, and fostering a culture of innovation. † Looking at its success, Boeing has had great strategies but the recent strategy of cost management has impacted the company, especially employees downsizing. This will eventually affected the company’s future performance as the second of the world’s leaders in aircraft industry. Expansion increases cost but one best thing is to keep its specialty. The only strategy I would suggest for Boeing to maintain its healthy organizational is to reduce its expansive activity, such as investor’s outreach program or realty activity, while maintaining its human resources. Corporate executives’ compensation should also be taken into consideration because no executives are successful without the employees.

Customer Relationship Management Essay - 4424 Words

Customer Relationship Management A relative of mine works for a corporate firm on CRM (Customer Relationship Management) software. He told me that their company is doing well with their CRM initiative while most of the other companies, using different software, are not achieving their goal of customer satisfaction. That gave me a big click of interest towards my research topic and I came up with a research questions as â€Å"How to avoid CRM failure?† and how to choose a best CRM software vendor?
